Authorities in Ecuador caused an international stir when they broke into the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas. This caused Mexico to decide to cut off all diplomatic ties with Ecuador.
Glas had been hiding in the embassy since December, saying he was being persecuted for his political views. He had been found guilty of corruption twice. But Ecuadorian police broke into the embassy and arrested him, which was strongly condemned by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of Mexico.
Lopez Obrador told Mexico’s foreign minister to cut off diplomatic links with Ecuador because it was acting aggressively and breaking international law and Mexican sovereignty.
To make matters worse, Ecuador kicked out Mexico’s representative because of what President Lopez Obrador said about Ecuador’s 2023 presidential elections.

As things got worse, Mexico said it would give Glas political refuge, which was strongly condemned by Ecuador’s government as a “illicit act.” Both countries got into a war of words, with Mexico accusing Ecuador of breaking diplomatic rules and Ecuador accusing Mexico of meddling in its internal matters. This made the diplomatic dispute worse.
The diplomatic fallout shows how fragile international relationships are and how complicated asylum problems are. As Mexico and Ecuador try to figure out how to get out of this diplomatic mess, the effects of their actions are felt all over the region, which makes people worry about the security of Latin American diplomacy.
In the middle of a bad diplomatic situation, Jorge Glas’s life is in danger because he is caught in the middle of a fight between two nearby countries. The international community is holding their breath, hoping that this political impasse can be broken quickly. Tensions are rising.
